Stuart Alter - the Art of color

I love color!  Color led me to canvas.  Color keeps me returning to canvas.  Creative, playful, joyful expression of color is why I paint.

My artwork focuses on color by conveying it across a canvas through movement and shape.  I intentionally paint with a raw and innate energy that allows the colors, forms, and action to virtually express themselves. I am astounded and delighted as the elements come together in a synergistic experience appearing on the canvas.

I often take inspiration from a moment of time in nature - the early spring lavender of wisteria, the deep violet and red saturation of tulips, and green of fresh foliage and lawn.  Or sometimes I inspire of the colors themselves by choosing a few tubes of paint and letting the others beckon to be included at just the right moments.  I’d been asked to commission an 'orange' piece and I watched as the purples and yellows leapt onto the canvas adjacent, over, under, around, and through the orange unanticipated but certainly not unwelcome.

My paintings are titled with a word or phrases that deliberately allow for the myriad interpretations of abstract paintings which would naturally and likely be quite different than what mine would be.

The creative process is a fantastic one during which I often feel as I am as much a spectator as a participant.  As the painting emerges, I am the first one in awe of it.

‘Happy are the painters, for they shall not be lonely.  Light and colour, peace and hope, will keep them company to the end, or almost to the end, of the day. ‘

- Winston Churchill
